SAGE-Sponsored Open Reading Groups

Basic Guidelines

  1. All SAGE-sponsored reading groups are open to all matriculated graduate students at Wayne State University. Participants are free to attend or not attend a meeting, and if they do attend they will need to have read/viewed the corresponding texts for discussion. Allowed and encouraged is attendance at all SAGE-sponsored reading groups by all interested participants as they see fit and are able. Attendance at SAGE-sponsored reading group meetings is also encouraged for graduate students from other departments, e.g. Communications students attending the film reading group, etc.
  2. SAGE-sponsored reading groups will consist of the following: reading literature (or another type of text) or viewing a particular film in conjunction with one or more corresponding theoretical/analytical texts. All participants should propose possible readings and the group as a whole should select the readings. No individual(s) should decide all of the readings/viewings.
  3. Meeting times for reading groups will be decided collectively by active participants (via the reading group's list serv). Meeting times and locations are at the discretion of the entire group, and not just the organizer(s) or individual members.
  4. All reading groups will need to create their own list serv and provide that information to SAGE. Members of reading groups will be required to join their respective reading group's list serv. Correspondence between group members regarding individual reading group matters should not be made via the englishgrads, or everyone-so-far list servs.
  5. All groups will keep an updated schedule of meeting times, locations, and texts to be read/viewed at the scheduled meetings. This information will be posted on the SAGE bulletin board on the 10th floor of the English Dept. The group should designate someone to update this information periodically, as relevant. Also to be posted on the bulletin board will be the group's list serv email/archive address so that potential members can join the group. An updated schedule, and all other pertinent group information, should also be emailed to the SAGE webmaster so that the website can be kept updated for the same purposes.
  6. Active participants are encouraged to speak with professors to get advice on theoretical/analytical readings and their pairings with particular literary or filmic texts.
  7. Because these are SAGE-sponsored reading groups, all participants are asked to please abide by these basic guidelines so that peace and harmony can be maintained. All questions, suggestions, or problems can and should be directed to either your group's organizer(s) or to the SAGE officers. Please visit the SAGE website for contact and other information: http://www.english.wayne.edu/sage/
  8. Most of all, have fun!
