Minutes from SAGE meeting Fri. 9/8/06

-Jill Darling is in charge of minutes which may turn out to be a bad idea; she gets distracted, misses things…here is the transcript of the best notes she could take….

In attendance: (maybe cindy can fill this in, I saw her write the names down…Bradley, Mike McGinnis, Laura Estill, Renuka, Cindy, Mary, Jill Darling, Mary, Jessica, Clay, Cara, Vicki)

Handouts: Cindy has compiled info and suggestions from email and earlier discussion about what kinds of events, activities, endeavors SAGE would like to organize/pursue

Professional activities are key to our primary responsibility to develop in the profession.
Ken Jackson and others may be of assistance in helping with professional activities.

Oct. 6 is the workshop on revising papers for submission and publishing. We will co-sponsor this and advertise through email and flyers. The event will take place in two sessions: a panel of professors and a follow-up workshop of actual student papers. Students need to submit papers ahead of time in order to have them read by faculty.

This will be a first in hopefully a line of professionalization activities and workshops which SAGE will promote and make accessible to all levels of grad. Students (masters, Ph.D., full and part time, etc.)

What about teaching programs for new TAs? We have lost the mentor program, how can we replace this and offer pedagogy and etc. workshops and other resources for grad students who are also teaching? Suggestions: grading workshops, practical classroom info, etc.

Another idea: How to get through the Ph.D. program. We should offer workshops on how to understand course requirements, how to write a preface, prospectus, get through QEs.

So we have 3 main areas to tackle and organize under:
1. professionalization
2. GTA workshops and building resources
3. course/program requirements and grad. program issues.

Other ideas: social impromptu activies
Jessica: poetry and volunteer opportunities, Back Alley Bikes participation
Service learning
Visiting speakers: find out how to obtain univ funds to bring in a reader(s) next semester
Reading groups: no specifics on this but we can announce/post them on the website.
Participate in undergrad conference
Computers and Writing Conference in Spring '07 will need volunteers, organizational assistance, etc.

Next meeting next Fri 9/15 at 2pm to organize people into areas of interest and get to work! (Jill can't make it…good luck all!)
