WRITING FOR PUBLICATION WORKSHOP

Led by Professor Ruth Ray and GTA Mary Karcher

The Writing for Publication seminar and workshop will be held on the 6th of October from 2- 4PM. This will be the first in a series of professionalization seminars for graduate students developed by a collaborative group of professors and SAGE.

The first hour will be for everyone to attend and there will be several faculty members and speakers to discuss things like:

• how an article is different from a seminar paper -- and why.
• how to know when you've "read enough" to write an article. How to balance depth of ideas/discussion with breadth of reading/citations.
• how to move from making an interesting observation to posing an argument of interest to readers in the field.
• how to find venues for publishing, including journals that are friendly to unpublished writers factors in deciding whether to co-author an article.
• what to expect in terms of the process of publishing (time from submission to publication, working with editors, how to handle critical commentary, etc.)

The second hour will be when we get into groups and workshop our submitted papers. Participation in the workshop will entail the submission of a paper (25-30 pages) by the 25th of September. You can leave them in my mailbox on the 9th floor. Electronic submissions will not be accepted. If your paper is an old seminar paper, please be sure to cross off the course name, number and the professor's name. This timeframe should allow for enough time for us to organize them and for the faculty to read and respond to them.

Which brings me to the immediate purpose of this announcement. I need to know how many of you would like to participate in the workshop segment. This way we can determine how many faculty readers we will need.
