The variety of our offerings enables students to construct individual programs that suit their interests, promote their career aims, and increase their employment possibilities while satisfying standards of the profession. Formal education is enhanced by sponsored lectures and conferences which have featured speakers outside the university including Paul Bové, Gayatri Spivak, James Berlin, Russell Banks, Sander Gilman, Donna Haraway, Katherine Hayles, Paula Rabinowitz, and Hortense Spillers. The graduate students themselves are extremely active, frequently making presentations at national conferences and participating in writing contests and poetry readings. Special M.A. programs in writing follow one of two tracks: Creative Writing or Technical/Professional Writing. The Department welcomes applications from capable students seeking either the M.A. or the Ph.D. who wish to excel in the study of language and literature.
