Text[1]=["Kim Davis | Doctoral Student and GTA","If a course can set the direction of one's future, then that's what happened to Kim Davis when she took English 7040, The Teaching of Writing, with Dr. Ruth Ray in Kim's second semester as a master's student in the fall of 1999. Ruth's course was structured to combine theoretical readings with hands-on teaching experiences. To complete her experience requirement, Kim volunteered to tutor a student at a middle school in the city of Detroit and conducted a qualitative analysis of the experience for her ENG 7040 class project.
The intersection of theory and practice in that semester-long project appealed to Kim's pragmatic nature as an ex-corporate manager and became the catalyst for Kim's current research about community-based learning. When Kim was in the last semester of her master's program and about to become a doctoral student, she jumped at the opportunity to be part of a team that taught community-based writing classes in which university students worked with middle school students in an after-school program in the city of Detroit.

Kim currently is working on a dissertation about her two years of experience as a GTA in the community-based initiative. She is investigating the intersection between the theories that informed her teaching strategies and her actual experience at the community-based site.

Kim may have entered her graduate studies only with the goal of crossing over from a corporate to an academic career path, but she quickly found a new objective: investigating the crossover from theory to practice.
Coming Soon: Read more about Kim's current professional activities or browse our collective portfolio."]

She conducted interviews and found that the agency was in great need of donations.
Upon her return to WSU, Dr. Barton presented her preliminary research to Dr. Laurie Evans' Englsih 5830 class in professional writing, which immediately took up the cause for a semester project. The class read applied and theoretical articles, interacted with staff at the South Carolina agency and invited Michigan Gift of Life, a non-profit organ and tissue recovery organization, to give a class presentation.

At the end of the semester, students presented a written report to the South Carolina agency that examined communications between the agency and local hospitals and offered suggestions for increasing donations. Dr. Barton wrote her award-winning article about this class project.
"]

He enrolled in Gwen Gorzelsky's English 5790 (Writing Theory), where students read literacy theory and mentored Detroit middle-school students in an after-school program. Thomas did similar work the following semester in Dr. Gorzelsky's English 7030 course (Introduction to Research in Writing), where he also learned more about ethnographic research and classroom inquiry.
In the following years, as a GTA, Thomas thaught community-based writing courses, joined a community-based reading group for graduate studetns, and gave his first paper (on community-based teaching) at the 2002 Conference on College Composition and Communication.
Having competed a master's essay on students' writing in community-based classes, Thomas is now extending this inquiry in his dissertation, for which he is conducting ethnographies of community-based classrooms. Besides conducting his dissertation research this year, Thomas plans to develop a green writing course that involves team-based learning (on campus and in community sites) on environmental issues. Text[21]=[" Ruth Ray","Service-learning, as well as community work in general, is one of the most effective ways I've found to integrate theory and practice for me and my students. It's also challenging, dynamic and stressful, but never, ever boring. It's impossible to get complacent in teaching a service-learning course or in creating a service-learning program. Justin Vidovic "]
Text[22]=["Justin Vidovic","I stay involved with service-learning because I think both people and institutions learn more effectively through relationships than through books alone. Service-learning is a way for me to stay integrated in my community. Finally, service-learning gives me one more way to keep my ideas and my writing in constant communication with my actions. Justin Vidovic "]
Text[23]=["Jessica Rivait","Before I discovered service-learning I was an active student-volunteer leader who addressed social issues and encouraged others to do the same. Service-learning provides me with something volunteering could not do alone: it allows me to explore different paradigms and design solutions beyond the limits of the non-profit realm. Now, instead of looking at volunteer service as an ultimate solution, I look at service as a way to unlearn what I think I know--which compels me to experiment utilizing disparate approaches when investigating complex community relationships. Jessica Rivait "]
Text[24]=["Gwen Gorzelsky","Service-learning makes my courses meaningful to students. They see quickly how course work on writing and social issues relates to the people and communities they encounter in their service projects. They develop academic sckills and learn to work effectively across cultures. As a result, they can better understand and use the concepts they're learning in class. Gwen Gorzelsky "]

Text[27]=["Shashi Thandra, MA","After chitchatting with the Buddha about Tibet, Shashi Thandra incarnated in South India and was forced to spend eight years with the postcolonial savages learning the Queen’s English. He jumped at the chance to return to Columbus’ India, America, and has spent much of his waking life there. Shashi decided not to walk at commencement after completing his B.A at Wayne State University, fearing that the Phi Beta Kappa key would knot itself in the Magna Cum Laude tassels causing him to trip before receiving his English degree (with honors). He is a humble man.
When Gwen Gorzelsky thoroughly whopped up on Shashi during a sparring session at the martial arts school they both attended, he realized that learning to live a peaceful, mindful life is only for sissies who are not interested in the amorphous, emerging field known as Globalization Studies. Shashi’s involvement in community-based writing is based less on a desire to practice and theorize the aphorism, “Think globally, act locally,” than to take revenge on Dr. Gorzelsky through the Honor students he will be teaching and whose program he hopes to shape at the departmental level.
Shashi believed that he unraveled the question of Being while eating chocolate and shaping his Bonsai, immediately forsook his primary scholastic interest in alterity, but lost his realization when Buddha reminded him not to be a ham in public spaces."]
