English 3010 :Advanced Expository Writing

These courses take students into various community sites, e.g., Detroit Public schools, an urban senior center, a soup kitchen, an urban pre-school, an environmental justice group.

Students participate in various ways, from literacy tutoring to general mentoring, to writing biographies and oral histories, to coordinating projects for community organizations.

Instructors choose texts and design projects and assignments to integrate students’service work with the academic content of the course. Students contribute to the community and develop research and writing skills by doing projects relevant to their community site.

In the process, students and teachers together build skills in collaboration and in working with others from diverse backgrounds. Both tenured faculty and graduate students develop and teach these courses.
