:: roots | history of the community-based writing group

Our roots_ We began in 1998 with a handful of undergraduate courses in oral history and urban literacies.

How we grew_ The undergraduate courses led to graduate-student mentoring and research assistantships, which in turn sparked the development of graduate seminars and research projects in community literacy.

Where we stand_ We are a small core of faculty and graduate students committed to effecting social change by teaching and researching literate practices in local communities. Our group is very much a work in progress.
