Major and Minor Requirements in English

Major in English

Degree Requirements: Candidates for the bachelor's degree must complete 120 credits in course work including satisfaction of the College of Liberal Arts Group Requirements and the University General Education Requirements, as well as the major requirements listed below. All course work must be completed in accordance with the academic procedures of the University and the College governing undergraduate scholarship and degrees.

Major Requirements consist of twelve English courses beyond the University General Competency Requirement and Liberal Arts Group Requirements. Ten of these courses must be beyond the 2000 level. Specific requirements are as follows:

A. English 3100: Introduction to Literary Studies

B. Three courses in English & American literature

3110: English literature to 1700
3120: English literature after 1700
3140: American literature

C. One course in theory

5040: Film Criticism and Theory
5080: Topics in Cross Disciplinary and Cultural Studies
5090: Topics in Literary and Cultural Theory
5600: Studies in Folklor
5700: Introduction to Linguistic Theory
5740: Theory of Syntax
5750: Theory of English as a Second Language
5790: Writing Theory

D. One comparative or cross-disciplinary course

5030: Topics in Women's Studies
5060: Styles and Genres in Film
5070: Topics in Film
5480: Topics in African-American Literature
5580: The Art of Translation
5590: Topics in Comparative Literature
5650: Folklore and Literature
5670: Topics in Folklore and Folklife
5870: Poetry Writing Workshop
5880: Fiction Writing Workshop
5890: Writing for the Theatre

E. English Senior Seminar

5992: pre-req: completion of A, B & C

F. Writing Intensive

(5993, no credit, no tuition, normally taken with 5992)

G. Five electives in English

(three of which must be at the 5000 level; 5820 may count only once)

The Department recommends that students preparing themselves for graduate work in literature choose course work that will expose them to a broad historical range of English and American texts. Students who wish to teach English on the secondary school level are advised to take a course in Shakespeare (English 2200 or 5150), courses in American literature beyond the major requirements, and an advanced course either in composition, composition theory, or the teaching of writing. Students are free to select courses in any of the fields of English studies and to emphasize any one of the areas covered by the Department's course offerings.

Minor in English

The Minor in English, created for students wishing to pursue studies in one program within the English Department, requires six courses (18 credit hours) beyond the 100-level. (No more than two courses at the 2000-level may count towards the minor.) To complete a minor in English students must:

A. One survey of literature

(ENG 3110, 3120, or 3140).

B. One 500-level concentrated studies course

(ENG 5080- 5590).

C. Two of ENG 2200, 3110, 3120, 3140, or 5000-level courses.

D. Two further English electives.
