About the Major

Film studies is a program that offers undergraduate students the opportunity to examine cinema from a variety of perspectives: as a visual and narrative art form, as an important social and cultural force in the twentieth century, as an industry and as a technologically based communication medium.

Students interested in film studies with an emphasis in critical and historical studies in film are encouraged to meet with Professor Burgoyne in the Department of English, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Students interested in film production and analysis are encouraged to meet with Professor Jackie Byers in the Department of Communication, College of Fine , Performing, and Communication Arts.

Students who major in Film Studies may be preparing for careers as film teachers, film librarians and archivists, film critics, script writers, or workers in film production. Additional study at the graduate level is usually required to achieve these goals.
